Bio
AKA Maxwell Volume, if you're not into the whole brevity thing. I make music (as Homeostasis & jlmxv, amongst other projects), run Tryptophonic Records, and try to think thoughts that translate into actions which contribute positively to the world and to humanity. My #music is variously #psychedelic, #ambient, #satire, #spacerock, #kosmische, #electronic, #minimalist, #outsider & #avantgarde. I am strongly against corporations, capitalism, neoliberalism, the repression of races, genders, minorities, ie an old-school leftie #socialist, who is also interested in #degrowth, #permacomputing, #freesoftware, #diy #music & #synthesizers. Finally - (i) I don't take myself seriously, (ii) without humour, we have nothing, & (iii) reality is an incredibly elaborate practical joke.

jump to recentIt's #NetLabelDay! Here's to all the #weird #obscure #obsessive #enthused #effusive #outsider #indie #unheard passion projects and all other #music that exists online outside the corporate sales-pitch panopticon AI Amazong Boogle hellscape.
I've had an almighty shittery of a year thus far being sick or recovering 4 out of 6 months, so I haven't prepared anything special this time round - which is a shame, as 2025 marks the 25th year I've run a #Netlabel. A potted history follows, for the two of you out there who are interested in such things!
Starting in 1999 I cobbled together what would now be called a netlabel which I called Novy Mir (after a combo of the samizdat adjacent Russian experimental magazine & the British new wave SF mag New Worlds), with a lot of help from Michael Moorcock and a little bit of Hawkwind-adjacency, I released ten or so albums on tape, a couple of CDs and attempted to make downloads work on dialup (failing on the latter). Later, 2010ish I formed Flamedog Records with Orlando Allen (lots of Gong family, Daevid Allen, Gilli Smyth etc). This time with full independent self-hosted paid downloads (as opposed to Bandcramp, Spitifiy etc). In 2018, from the ashes of burnout and mental anguish I set up my third and hopefully final label Tryptophonic Records, which exists to this day. All downloads free, #CreativeCommons and "pay if you like".
So there you go. I recently released a #psychedelic #ambient #drone album entitled Longmeadow under the moniker of jlmxv, which is a collab between myself and @jlm - free to download at https://tryptophonic.com/longmeadow/
#Synthtember No.3 “Senex Luna” Tonight's #electronic #music #improvisation leans into #psychedelic #ambient dare I say almost #BerlinSchool territory. Who knows? Not I, at any rate.

Ever since I moved to #GoToSocial a couple of years ago I've had problems with embeding audio in posts. It was something that kept me from moving over to GTS initially, and it definitely supports it nowadays, but I can't for the life of me make it work. Perhaps it's something to do with me using #Tuba as a client? I dunno what the problem is, but it's a bit frustrating. It's probably more sensible to link to audio tracks posted on my #WriteFreely blog, but it definitely lacks the immediacy of being able to listen to things directly in one's preferred fedi client.
Not quite #ambient, neither is it quite #minimalism, it's almost certainly not #IDM, but it most assuredly is a #synthesizer #improvisation and there is absolutely no question that it's #Synthtember No. 1 "False Positive" by jlmxv.

Remember, remember, the 1st of #synthtember!
I was about to post a pithy message hereabouts concerning something I just saw, along the lines of "I just watched a video of the new incarnation of something that once meant a great deal to me, but this new version I feel is utterly abhorrent", and then realised that it's probably this kind of whinging that is part of the overall problem I believe western culture is suffering from nowadays, so I shall remain silent on the subject (with the exception of what I've written just now - which is of course in itself contributing to the general white noise, but I'll just let that pass for the sake of avoiding some kind of infinitely recursive self-reflexive philosophical vortex).
Must be time to bust out the blue undies bike helmet sword man album at high volume. #BlackSabbath #OzzyOzzbourne
I've always been quite partial to the #Cardigans versions of #BlackSabbath and #OzzyOzzbourne songs.

Well, that's about wraps it up for anyone wanting to listen to #BBC #radio outside the UK. That really really sucks. I discovered swathes of amazing music on shows like Unclassified, Night Tracks, Freak Zone, Ultimate Calm, Dream Time etc etc. They were more or less my personal soundtrack of the last few years. The tide of #enshittification continues ever onwards. #BBCRadio

Thus, it begins. #DroneDay #DroneDay2025
Gently vibrating the brain cells & ears with #DaevidAllen's album Seven Drones, as I fire up the gear in preparation for this year's #DroneDay. What a fine album it is!
High octane, adrenaline-pumping, pulse-pounding local news straight from the mean streets of the #NorthernRivers #NSW #Australia tonight: "Car crashes into mound of dirt, police dogs find driver hiding in cane field". https://indynr.com/car-crashes-into-mound-of-dirt-police-dogs-find-driver-hiding-in-cane-field/
Ah bugger, I missed the tribute to the legendary #AntonyGreen, having switched off the TV to play celebratory music after Albo's speech concluded. Here's to an absolute pillar of Australian political reportage! #ABC #AusPol
OK #Australia, it's #election day again. Please, PLEASE do the right thing, and don't vote the psychopathic potatohead into power. #AusPol
Cor blimey! Today it's twenty whole actual earth years since one of my favourite #music gigs (at which I was a performer, at least). The debut performance of #Tripswyche - a VERY #psychedelic, #experimental band comprised of #DaevidAllen (mastermind behind #Gong, on guitars, tapes and nudity), Kavi Samut (from Electric Tepee, on bells, whistles and kaoss), Misbah (poetry and weirdsmithery) and myself (on guitars and inexplicable noise). Held in a grungy venue in a seedy corner of Brisbane's Fortitude Valley on the 1st of April, 2005, it was an incredibly cosmic exploration of death, with added touches of fame, capitalism and art. And humour, definitely humour - it was a highly amusing experience!
If you need more strangeness in your life, you can stream or download the whole performance here - https://tryptophonic.com/endgame-death-ritual/
Happy #MusiciansDay! (yeah I missed it here in Oz but it's still the 27th elsewhere on the globe). I make #psychedelic, #ambient, #analogue #electronic and otherwise #weird #music, some of which I have placed delicately and with loving care upon the undulating digital waves of the information stuporhighway - aka my #Faircamp site, here -

An example thereof, by way of an audiovisual manifestation, aka a film clip, can be seen on my #Peertube here -
