@Mastodon dammit why no one tell me. XD I guess need to follow the dev better!

@thejikz @Mastodon not sure why I thought the QR code wouldn't work xD

@bhhaskin @Mastodon hands down the most common response when I had it with me at a large gathering. Getting past that, the most amusing thing was people didn't know you could SCROLL DOWN! newfangled things and all!

@Mastodon Does it finally have a federated tab though?

@KO6YQ @Mastodon @fdroidorg If you don't want to use the Play Store, you can also download an APK directly from our GitHub releases page. The F-Droid package is managed by F-Droid and seems to be a few versions behind.

@Gargron @Mastodon @fdroidorg OK, thanks. It isn't that I don't want to use Play Store. I wanted to support the Open Source project. So this thread has already brought the polite ping to the attention of @fdroidorg . It looks like their automated build got stuck, and maybe they needed to know about it.

@Mastodon

Dear Mastodon Team,

I hope this message finds you well. My name is JinRyangKR, and I am reaching out to express my keen interest in establishing a more significant presence on your platform, Mastodon. I have been actively contributing and engaging with communities across various social media platforms, where I have successfully obtained verification badges. These badges have not only bolstered my credibility but have also enabled me to connect more effectively with my audience.

@Mastodon I am writing to inquire about the possibility of obtaining a blue verification mark for my Mastodon account (@JinRyang). Despite my verified status on other platforms, I noticed that my account on Mastodon has not been granted this mark of authenticity. I believe that having a verified account on Mastodon would further enhance my ability to engage with the community, prevent impersonation, and contribute positively to the ecosystem.

@Mastodon @JinRyang To support my request, I am more than willing to provide any necessary documentation or information required for the verification process. I understand and respect the criteria and guidelines set forth by Mastodon for account verification and am committed to adhering to them.

@Mastodon @JinRyang Mastodon's dedication to fostering open and transparent communication resonates deeply with me, and I am excited about the prospect of growing my presence on your platform. I am enthusiastic about contributing to the Mastodon community in a meaningful way and believe that the verification mark would be instrumental in achieving this goal.

@Mastodon
Hey guys, how does one obtain the freedom to post long-ish posts? Have seen many, but the moment I try a few more characters, it's a red-marked indication that I should cut down.
Genuine question, and I wish for such freedom and facility. Thanksmuch.

@gazeshift@mastodon.social @Mastodon@mastodon.social You use a platform that is not Mastodon (or is a Mastodon fork?). Regular Mastodon is limited to 500 characters. Other platforms have more.

@projectmoon
I see, mine just says mastodon.social for the account, have to explore possibilities. Thanksmuch.

@gazeshift@mastodon.social Fediverse (i.e. "federated universe") is kind of like email. There are many different servers running their own software that can talk to each other.

Like for example, you could have signed up (or still sign up) at mastodon.art, or hachyderm.io.

I am posting this to you from a platform called Sharkey, hosted on my own server. Sharkey itself is a fork of something called Misskey. It's a completely different piece of software than Mastodon, but they can talk to one another.

Most of the Fediverse is composed of Mastodon instances, of which mastodon.social is the largest. But there's plenty of other servers that don't use Mastodon.

@projectmoon
OK, cool, that's very helpful for a non-techie user, must explore. Thanksmuchmuch. 🙌

@Gazeshift You won't be able to get that on mastodon.social.

Either you try to find a Mastodon instance that has a raised character limit. However, there's no list of Mastodon instances with character limits.

Or you move to something that's part of the Fediverse, fully federated with Mastodon, but not Mastodon proper, such as:
  • Pleroma (5,000 characters by default)
  • Akkoma (5,000 characters by default)
  • Misskey (3,000 characters hard-coded, feels very Japanese)
  • forks of Misskey like Sharkey or Iceshrimp (thousands of characters by default)
  • Friendica (unlimited characters, handles nothing like Mastodon)
  • Hubzilla (unlimited characters, handles absolutely nothing like Mastodon, doesn't work with Mastodon apps; this is where I am)
  • the Streams repository (unlimited characters, handles absolutely nothing like Mastodon, doesn't work with Mastodon apps, public instances are few and hard to find)

They're all guaranteed to always give you many many more characters than vanilla Mastodon plus stuff like quotes, quote-posts and text formatting on top. But you'll have to get used to a wholly different UI and UX.
