4.3 is out! 🎉 We've made notifications easier to manage and improved the look and feel of the whole app across the board. And that's just the tip of the iceberg! See what you can expect once your server upgrades:

@Mastodon Thank you! As for "Helping writers and journalists", it was not clear to me if it is still a manual process. I'm a writer, and you like to have this set on my account.

@vladcampos No, it's no longer manual! Or rather, now it's manual on your side. Go to the Verification tab on your profile settings and add the domains you'd like to appear on under Author Attribution.

@Gargron Thank you. May I suggest adding that link to the blog post?

@vladcampos @Gargron +1 for adding this link! There's a lot of people on here who maintain their own websites (myself included) and I was puzzled as to why the Fediverse author tag wasn't working.

The verification process should be noted everywhere adding the meta tag to a site is mentioned.

@vladcampos @Gargron ...Or is it required? The UI copy in that panel of "Only allow specific websites" seems to indicate that if the field is empty any domain will be allowed?

@hank That's good point. Also, it seems that it doesn't work with already published posts. I added the meta tag to an old article and my account wasn't added as the author on Mastodon. @Gargron maybe a post specifically about this topic clarifying all details would be helpful.

@vladcampos I assume this is a caching issue and that Mastodon will only check the site again once it finds a new URL? Going forward I imagine it won't be much of a problem if it works the way I think it does... Just a bit of a funny rollout for the first of us trying to make sure it works!

@Gargron @Mastodon Good morning. I set everything up, and posted some articles after that, and it's not working here. Is there anything else that I have to set up?

@vladcampos the test post you published has been already posted by you two days ago, so it is already cached probably. Try it with a new post, then it should work 👍

@philipp Thank you. I'll try it, but I'm not sure if that's the case. @otaviocc tested his tag by doing precisely that, reposting an already published post.

@vladcampos @Mastodon you add the fediverse:creator tag to your website, and then use the verification options in Mastodon 4.3 profile settings page to specify which domain this should work on. blog.joinmastodon.org/2024/07/

@andypiper @Mastodon Is there any delay or propagation needed for it to work? I added the tag and posted a link (below) after that, but it didn't work.

mastodon.social/@vladcampos/11

@vladcampos @Mastodon you will also need to add the domain into your profile settings - apart from that I don't think there should be a delay.

@Mastodon
Hopefully "we’ve introduced a little carousel with follow recommendations that will appear above the first post older than four hours on the first page of your home feed" can be turned off, otherwise ok.

@AlisonW We designed an option to make sure it stays hidden forever :)

@Mastodon Is there something special about the videos on the website? Soon as one of those hits the viewport, the cooling-fan of my Laptop freaks out. I don't see that on other sites with videos.

@thorsten4future I think it's because they are recorded on Mac. Mac records them with high resolution, often high bitrate, and using encoding that is difficult for older hardware to decode. Seems all videos on the site play at the same time, so this lags browser badly - my Firefox doesn't even ‘play’ the videos (skips all frames). They also all really need to be re-encoded into something lighter and widely used

@Mastodon Some excellent features in this release - and really pleased to see that quote-posting is on the way next time around too

@Mastodon @renchap Huge congrats on shipping this release!

@Mastodon Any way to go back to the previous theme? The new one is very hard to read and harsh on the eyes :S Other than that, great job!

@YoSoyFreeman @Mastodon I agree with you, the contrast is too high

@Mastodon Thank you! Grouped notifications are a game changer.

@Mastodon glad to see quote posts are next on your agenda!

@Mastodon
I never comment on posts like this and just silently rooting for y'all most of the time, but notifications tab has gotten worse.
Stars/boost icons look more prominent than user profile images which I think many people would find more important than the icons, as they help to more quickly indicate who is the user who responded to you.
In fact, those icons are now so huge, bright and right in the middle of a screen that they are the first thing that eye notices when you open mastodon

@Mastodon congrats, but on my mobile device (Pixel 5, LOS 21, Firefox 131) the UI is noticeably less responsive while scrolling.

@Mastodon I child be hallucinating, but this morning the UI is back to feeling more responsive.

@Mastodon change it back it's giving me eyestrain 💕

@Mastodon Does this mean we'll actually see this feature added somewhere in the 4.3 branch? Because that would be awesome.

@Mastodon I wondered why my instance was looking a tad different, ta. 🙂

@Mastodon Yarn 4 is required. Webpacker does not support Yarn 4. So I can't update the server.

RAILS_ENV=production bundle exec rails assets:precompile
Webpacker requires Yarn ">=1 <4" and you are using 4.0.2
This version of Webpacker does not support Yarn 4.0.2. Please downgrade to a supported version of Yarn yarnpkg.com/lang/en/docs/insta
Exiting!

YarnYarnFast, reliable, and secure dependency management.

@Mastodon Can we have a 'not quite so bright' theme please. I prefer light themes but not THAT light. Or is this something the server admin can add?

@DramatisPaws @Mastodon Admins can add themes, but the only way to do it is to change the source code directly. Unlike many other fediverse software, there is no support in Mastodon to supply custom themes by means other than providing a different set of css.

@DramatisPaws @Mastodon seconding this, I really liked the default theme. but it's suddenly too bright :(

@Mastodon Remember to read the release notes!
Just saying from someone who didn't.....😜

@lnxgeek
not reading the @Mastodon release notes is the perfect path to become a very sad administrator... 😔

@Mastodon I follow the releases via github RSS. While this update had more steps, it was one of the most pain-free updates I've had with Mastodon!

@Mastodon

Awesome! Yet I will be super duper happy when mixed media upload (image/video) will be possible! :D

@Mastodon

Any news on when maximum characters per post will be configurable by admins via their console?

@Mastodon @Gargron
Sorry to say notifications are broken on the android app. The notification tab in the app won't update or show complete info.

Happened a month or two ago on my phone, then it seemed to be fixed. Now happening again, and also on my tablet. I saw a few other people mention this too.

Reinstalling the app via playstore doesn't help.

Also, links to YouTube no longer work. Clicking on the link gets a 'no app installed to handle that' warning.

Mastodon 2.7.2 (121)

Am I on the wrong version?

Edit: I have all the latest Android and OneUI updates. Galaxy S23 Ultra, Galaxy Tab S7. Cl3ared the Mastodon cache. Rebooted. Reinstalled the app. Rebooted. Didn't help.

@BobHorowitz @Mastodon @Gargron I finally figured out why it was happening, I forgot to copy-paste several lines of code 🙈
And I didn't notice it because mastodon.social is on 4.3. Fix will be available soon in the next minor update.

@grishka @Mastodon @Gargron Great! Thank you for checking into this!

Best regards,
Bob

@Mastodon Please put a Classic option in the Appearances selector in config.

@Mastodon CWs and filtered posts are awful now, a real UX regression.

@Mastodon
Mastodon keeps improving. It is a quiet way. Mastodon respects privacy. Also, it does not compromise with privacy and security. Mastodon swiftly removes false news or untrue information if someone finds fake news or unfounded information..

@Mastodon And as usual, a seamless upgrade performed successfully on my instance! Good job.
